pH-induced hysteretic gating of track-etched polycarbonate membranes (TEPC) has been achieved by depositing layer-by-layer assembled polyelectrolyte multilayers comprising poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) at a high pH condition (pH > 9.0). Scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy showed that the average bilayer thickness of multilayers was greater within the cylindrical pores of track-etched polycarbonate membranes compared to the multilayers on planar substrates (e.g., Si wafers and the face of TEPC membranes). Swelling/deswelling properties of multilayers and gating properties of the multilayer-modified TEPC membranes were studied by measuring the flux of pH-adjusted deionized water. Large discontinuous changes in the transmembrane flux were observed, indicating that the multilayers within the cylindrical pores of TEPC membranes exhibit the discontinuous swelling/deswelling behavior observed previously for planar systems. The degree of swelling as estimated by simple models, however, showed that (PAH/PSS) multilayers in the confined geometry swelled to smaller extents compared to the same multilayers on planar substrates under the same conditions. Multilayer-modified membranes showed reversible gating properties as the pH condition of feed solution was alternated between pH 2.5 and 10.5. In situ atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used to visualize the closing of the pores as a function of time. The hysteretic gating property of the multilayer-modified TEPC membrane was utilized to achieve either a "closed" or "open" state at one pH condition depending on the pretreatment history, thereby enabling either the retention or passage of high-molecular weight polymers by varying the membrane pretreatment condition. 相似文献

We investigate the role of self-trapped excitons (STEs) and defects in the formation of femtosecond laser pulse induced nanogratings (NGs) in fused silica. Our experiments reveal strongly enhanced NG formation for pulse separations up to the STE lifetime. In addition, the absorption spectra show that the weaker cumulative action of laser pulses for longer temporal separations is predominantly mediated by dangling-bond-type lattice defects that emerge from decaying STEs. 相似文献

Since opening a new flight connection or closing an existing flight has a great impact on the revenues of an airline, the generation of the flight schedule is one of the fundamental problems in airline planning processes.In this paper we concentrate on a special case of the problem which arises at charter companies. In contrast to airlines operating on regular schedules, the market for charter airlines is well-known and the schedule is allowed to change completely from period to period. Thus, precise adjustments to the demands of the market have a great potential for minimizing operating costs.We present a capacitated network design model and propose a combined branch-and-cut approach to solve this airline schedule generation problem. To tighten the linear relaxation bound, we add cutting planes which adjust the number of aircraft and the spill of passengers to the demand on each itinerary.For real-world problems from a large European charter airline we obtain solutions within a very few percent of optimality with running times in the order of minutes on a customary personal computer for most of the data sets. 相似文献

A flash thermodesorption-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry technique has been developed for the determination of polychlorobiphenyls (PCB), especially the highly toxic planar species, in sewage sludge. A modified Curie-point pyrolyzer was used; in this the flash-desorption temperature was controlled by selecting specific metal alloys for the pyrolysis wire. Samples (3 mg) were loaded into a quartz tube with the special heating wire wound around the outer wall. By this means rapid thermal desorption (TDS) was achieved whereas uncontrolled catalytic breakdown of the analytes was avoided. The thermodesorption unit was connected via a custom-built interface to the GC-MS detection system. The average limit of detection was 15 microgram kg(-1) sludge more than one order of magnitude better than the legal requirement. 相似文献
